Laura Barbeau, M.A., LMFT
Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist
MN Board Approved Supervisor
“Mental Health” is the goal….right? If you are looking for a therapist it is likely something is not working in your life. So how does one find a sense of calm and contentment, with the knowledge you can handle what comes your way in life?
Variables in our genetics, environment, and the coping patterns we have learned in our past all contribute to who we are now, and how near, or far, we are from the state of well-being we are seeking. I can help you sort through what your choices are in learning, working through, healing, changing, accepting and learning to manage.
While I will use a variety of methods; from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Psychodynamic interventions, the foundation of my way of thinking about human interactions is drawn from Attachment Theory. In that, all humans have a powerful, innate need to be connected and know they matter to other human beings. Not only in childhood, but throughout the life cycle. Relationships matter! We are better able to reach our potential and withstand the trials of life when we have relationships that are working well. I have always had a fascination with how we as humans become who we truly are, while connecting and supporting each other. This takes a lot of hard work and it is so worth the effort!
What I love about the work I do is getting to know people so fully; how they have made sense of their past experiences, and how that has led them to living their life along the way. It is like solving a puzzle that I never tire of with each person. As I discern patterns in a client’s life, from this objective, (yet educated and caring) stance, this helps my clients to know themselves better which leads to making the changes in their lives that bring them into closer alignment with the life they want to lead.
I have had a broad base of experience over the past eight years working in school settings, in-home therapy with children and their families, individual and couples counseling, and in outpatient mental health clinics. I have specialized in postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, emotionally focused couples therapy, attachment theory, grief and loss, depression and anxiety, transition to parenthood, and new family development.
I also provide Supervision for pre-licensed marriage and family therapists as a MN Board Approved Supervisor. I received my Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Mary’s University in Minnesota. I have pursued many interest areas over the course of my life, from creating fine arts to grassroots activism. My work is also informed by being the mother of four sons and from growing up in a very large Minnesota family. I truly enjoy working collaboratively with clients to develop healthy strategies to deal with life’s challenges.
